Capesius stole enough of the gold teeth fillings from Auschwitz to enable him to open his own pharmacy (above) in 1950 in the small German town of Göppingen. In 1952 he had earned enough money from that pharmacy to open a successful cosmetic institute in a neighboring village. The institute’s motto was ‘Be Beautiful with Treatment by Capesius’. While Capesius began rebuilding his postwar life, he paid little attention to the appointment in 1956 of Fritz Bauer as the first Jewish chief prosecutor in the nation’s history. He was a jurist who had served time briefly in a German concentration camp. Bauer had a passion for investigating war crimes. His goal was to locate enough high ranking SS officers who had served at Auschwitz to hold a showcase trial about the crimes of the Final Solution. He was not long in his new position before he opened a file on Capesius. (Schindlerfoto Oberursel).
